Over the years, Diabetes and its treatment have become a core focus for researchers and medical doctors from all over the globe. From countless medications approved for the two types of Diabetes, Ozempic has perhaps become the most effective against Type 2 Diabetes. Today, we will discuss how exactly Ozempic has attained this status.
What exactly is Diabetes?
Historically, Diabetes was first considered a disorder back in 1812. Ancient Egyptians however did have some idea about the disorder around 1500 BCE. Diabetes has now become a global and widespread disorder as it affects blood glucose levels. In most cases, Diabetes results in an elevation of blood glucose within the body.
It is surprising to note that as per official reports published in the year 2019, around 37 million people in the United States are affected by one of the two types of diabetes. This roughly estimates up to 11.3% of the US population being diabetic.
Causes, Symptoms, and Types of Diabetes
There are no exact symptoms or environmental factors that may cause Diabetes within an indidividuals. Still, there are some factors that can be labelled as causes of Diabetes which are as follows,
- Insulin Resistance: Type 2 Diabetes is usually caused by prolonged insulin resistance. The condition arises when your liver, muscles, and fat cells stop responding to insulin as they should.
- Hormonal Imbalancement: During pregnancy the placenta is responsible for release of hormones that may cause insulin resistance within the body leading to Deabeted development if the hormonal imbalancements becomes prolonged.
- Genetic Mutations: There are certain genetic mutations that may cause development of Diabetes within children right after birth or at a very young age.
It is important to note that some individuals may be considered as pre-diabetic without showing any symptoms of Diabetes. According to majority of medical experts, once the symptoms of diabetes start appearing, you need to take concrete and swift actions. These symptoms include,
- Frequent Urination
- Increased Thirst
- Numbness or tingling in your hands or feet
- Unexplained weight loss
- Extreme fatigue even with proper rest cycles
- Slow healing of wounds or minor cuts throughout the body
- Increased ratio of skin / vaginal yeast infections
But these symptoms are not specified for a particular type of Diabetes and can be labelled as ‘general’ symptoms of Diabetes onset. The types of Diabetes however are usually divided into two separate labels,
Type I Diabetes:
This type of Diabetes is comparatively rare and around only 10% individuals are diagnosed with Type I Diabetes. It is caused by an auto-immune response where the immune systems attacks the insulin-producing cells of pancreas and destroys them, dirupting the body’s blood glucose levels in the process.
Type 2 Diabetes:
The most common type of Diabetes diagnosed in around 90% individuals. The core cause of Type 2 diabetes is insulin resistance which can be trigerred by factors like anxiety, obesity, improper diet patterns, emotional stress, etc.
What is Ozempic?
Now comes the focus of today’s debate. What exactly is Ozempic? Well, Ozempic is an FDA approved medication used to treat/manage the symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes. The drug gots its approval for glyemic control within adult patients back in 2017. The drug focuse on helping your pancreas to create more insulin once the blood glucose levels cross a certain limit. As a result, Ozempic achieves some highly effective results when it comes to Type 2 Diabetes treatment.
Ozempic Dosage and Administration
Generally, Ozempic is administered as a 0.25 mg dosage for around four weeks. You need to inject Ozempic in your lower abdomen, thigh, or upper arm once a week, with or without a meal. Once the four week period is completed, dosage can be increased to 0.5 mg per week with the same injection pattern.
In extremely rare case, the dose is either increased to 1 mg or 2mg per week depending upon the level of glucose control that is required. But such measures are taken only bt the doctor’s approval or under the supervision of professional help.
Is Ozempic Effective For Type 2 Diabetes Treatment?
From what studies have shown us and what our patients at MY IV Doctors tell us about the experience, yes, Ozempic is infact quite effective for Type 2 Diabetes Treatment. When injected, Ozempic focuses on assisting pancreas with more insuline production in order to lower blood glucose levels to an average level.
The drug also prevents the liver from producing any more glucose than necessary which further regulates the blood glucose levels. The rate at which the food leaves the stomach is also regulated by the drug ensuring that you feel full after a meal and do not make binge or unhealthy eating choices.
Safety Concerns Associated With Ozempic
Apart from its widespread and ‘safe’ considered usage in majority of patients, Ozempic comes with a ‘black-box warning’ for patients who have a higher chance of developing thyroid c-cell tumors or have family history revolving around development of such tumors. Also, Ozempic isn’t prescribes for patients who are hypersensistive to the drug.
But the important thing to note down here is that Ozempic has only been tested and showed development of thyroid c-cell tumors within animal models. The drug is contradicted in this regard as its impact on human models is still not known.
