Renting with an ESA in Des Moines
Des Moines has a little of everything for renters. East Village lofts and downtown apartment buildings draw young professionals, older homes in Sherman Hill have been carved into units and Drake students fill houses around the university every August. Out in Beaverdale and Highland Park you'll find brick bungalows and small multiplexes run by individual landlords. Iowa has its own rules on documentation for assistance animals in housing, so a letter from a clinician who actually evaluated you carries more weight than a quick online certificate.

Iowa ESA laws for Des Moines renters
Iowa has one of the more detailed ESA laws in the country. Iowa Code 216.8B governs assistance animal requests in rentals, and 216.8C lists exactly what a clinician's written finding must say, including whether the two of you have worked together for at least thirty days. Expect that timeline before an Iowa landlord will treat a letter as complete.
- Iowa Code 216.8C asks the provider to state whether the relationship has lasted thirty days or more; telehealth visits count toward that period.
- The finding must list the provider's license number and type, an issue and expiration date and whether a separate fee was paid just for the letter.
- Under 216.8B, ID cards, patches and certificates from animal registries do not establish a disability or need on their own.

Your Des Moines ESA letter, step by step
Book a time
Pick a phone or video slot online and answer a short questionnaire about how you are feeling and the animal you live with in Des Moines.
Talk with a licensed clinician
A licensed clinician spends about 5–10 minutes with you and decides whether an emotional support animal is part of your care.
Follow Iowa's documentation rules
Iowa law adds requirements before a letter counts, such as a minimum treatment relationship, an in-person visit or a clinician licensed in the state. The clinician explains what applies to you and when the letter can be issued.
Your signed letter arrives
Once the state's requirements are met and the clinician approves, the letter is emailed as a PDF with their license details. You pay only if it is approved.
