Colorado service dog laws
Colorado's service animal statute, C.R.S. 24-34-803, goes further than many states: it covers housing and workplaces as well as public accommodations, and it lets handlers keep their service animal with them at all times on the job. It sits alongside the ADA, and handlers can bring an individually trained dog in without paying extra.
- Trainers, and people with disabilities training their own animal, get the same access with a service animal in training under C.R.S. 24-34-803(2).
- Intentionally passing off a pet as a service animal after a prior warning is a petty offense under C.R.S. 18-13-107.7, with fines of $25 to $500.
- Owners with disabilities are exempt from state and local licensing fees that would otherwise apply to their service animal.
- Employers must reasonably accommodate an employee's service animal at work unless doing so would cause undue hardship.
