Iowa service dog laws
Iowa Code 216C.11 is the state counterpart to the ADA for service animals in public places. It protects people with disabilities, handlers controlling a dog for someone else and trainers alike, and it extends to service-animals-in-training. Businesses cannot charge extra for the animal, though handlers pay for any damage it does.
- Trainers and service-animals-in-training get the same right of entry to public accommodations as working teams under Iowa Code 216C.11.
- Intentionally misrepresenting an animal as a service animal or one in training, to gain legal rights, is a simple misdemeanor.
- Knowingly denying or interfering with a handler's access rights is also a simple misdemeanor under the same section.
- In rentals, Iowa Code 216.8B covers service animals as well, with the same written-response requirement for landlords.
