Louisiana service dog laws
Louisiana's service dog law, R.S. 46:1952 and following, reads much like the ADA in public places but goes further in a few spots. Its definition of a service dog covers dogs trained or being trained for tasks, and it names several types. Housing is covered too: R.S. 46:1954 gives service dog users full and equal access with no extra charge.
- R.S. 46:1955 gives trainers and puppy raisers the same access rights as handlers while they work with a future service dog.
- Since 2024, misrepresenting an animal as a service dog or service dog-in-training to a business or landlord is unlawful under R.S. 46:1975, with escalating fines.
- Interfering with a handler's rights, or injuring a service dog, can mean a $100 to $500 fine and up to six months in jail (R.S. 46:1956).
- Staff may ask only whether the dog is needed for a disability and what task it performs, and cannot require certification documents.
