New Jersey service dog laws
New Jersey folds service and guide dog rights into its Law Against Discrimination. N.J.S.A. 10:5-29 opens public facilities to handlers at no extra charge, section 10:5-29.3 extends the same access to trainers who are actively training, and section 10:5-29.2 covers housing. New Jersey also fines people who interfere with a handler or fit a dog with a guide harness to fake its status.
- N.J.S.A. 10:5-29.3 gives a service or guide dog trainer the same access to public facilities as a person with a disability while training.
- In housing, section 10:5-29.2 exempts working and retired service dogs from no-pets lease clauses and bars extra charges for them.
- Section 10:5-29.5 sets a fine of $100 to $500 for interfering with a handler or putting a guide harness on a dog to pass it off.
- Recklessly injuring or interfering with a service animal is a separate offense under N.J.S.A. 2C:29-3.2, with restitution owed to the handler.
