Renting with an ESA in Louisville
Louisville renters find shotgun houses and Victorian conversions in Old Louisville and the Highlands, brick apartment buildings near Bardstown Road and suburban complexes in the East End. Older properties usually have individual owners with short leases, while large complexes follow written policies. Houses with shared entrances sometimes make owners nervous about animals, so be ready to explain how yours fits the space. Louisville Metro has its own Human Relations Commission that looks into discrimination complaints.

Kentucky ESA laws for Louisville renters
Kentucky regulates ESA documentation through KRS 383.085, added to its landlord-tenant law in 2018. When your need isn't obvious, a landlord can ask for documentation from a qualifying provider, and the statute is specific about who that is: a Kentucky-licensed clinician who actively practices in the state and has an ongoing therapeutic relationship with you. Recent arrivals get a narrow exception.
- Qualifying providers include licensed clinical social workers, professional counselors, APRNs, psychologists and physicians holding an unrestricted Kentucky license.
- If you recently moved to Kentucky, a letter from your provider in your former state works as long as that therapeutic relationship is ongoing.
- A provider whose main service is writing letters for a fee doesn't qualify, and supplying documentation mainly for a fee is itself an offense.

Your Louisville ESA letter, step by step
Book a time
Pick a phone or video slot online and answer a short questionnaire about how you are feeling and the animal you live with in Louisville.
Talk with a licensed clinician
A licensed clinician spends about 5–10 minutes with you and decides whether an emotional support animal is part of your care.
Follow Kentucky's documentation rules
Kentucky law adds requirements before a letter counts, such as a minimum treatment relationship, an in-person visit or a clinician licensed in the state. The clinician explains what applies to you and when the letter can be issued.
Your signed letter arrives
Once the state's requirements are met and the clinician approves, the letter is emailed as a PDF with their license details. You pay only if it is approved.
